Dulce De Leche Flan

Updated: Jan 6, 2022

Dulce De leche Flan! What is flan? Only the creamiest dessert you will ever taste! Flans are a staple in Hispanic homes especially us Puerto Ricans we Love our Flans! Flan is a custard base "cake". There is no flour and no leavening agents just sugar, milk, and eggs. A lot of flans are made combining sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, sugar, and eggs-that's your Basic Flan recipe.

Then there is Cheese Flans which are made with a cream cheese base, and that makes the Flans extra rich and creamy. *Then there is my Dulce De Leche Flan, in my opinion one of the Best Flans I've ever tasted and made! FULL ENGLISH & SPANISH RECIPE VIDEOS BELOW⬇️⬇️

I came up with this recipe one day I was in the mood for a Flan but had no vanilla extract or evaporated milk.

*FYI:I hate evaporated milk...idk something about the taste, I just always have to substitute it wherever it's needed.

Anyways I was in the mood for a Flan, but had no vanilla extract, so I thought to myself "How am I going to make a Vanilla custard Flan if I have no vanilla extract"? "What will give it that sweet vanilla flavor"? Then I looked through my pantry and there it was...waiting for me to find it!

A Delicious can of Dulce de Leche (La Lechera). That rich caramel flavor with hints of vanilla, I thought that would be perfect! So I opened up the can and gave it a taste and Nostalgia hit me. When I taste Dulce de Leche, it reminds of when I was younger and my Mom would buy us the packs of Goya Flan, they were some of the best ready made flan desserts i've tasted. They had that Dulce de Leche Caramel flavor on top, it was so Good! So I thought instead of making a caramel syrup myself and pouring it on the flan pan like a Traditional Flan recipe calls for, how about I just spread this delicious Dulce De Leche all over and see if that will work as the caramel base. Well let me tell you it did...and you are in for a Delicious surprise when you taste this recipe! I also wanted to incorporate that same Caramel Dulce de Leche flavor into the Flan itself, so I added the rest of the Dulce De Leche into the Flan custard mixture, thus this Delicious Recipe was born!

The great thing about this recipe is that it only uses 5 ingredients.

Ingredients:

-1 can Dulce de Leche (preferably La Lechera)

-1 (8 oz) package cream cheese

-1/2 can sweetened condensed milk

-1/2 cup granulated sugar

-5 eggs

Directions:

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Farenheit.

Spread a 1/4 cup of the Dulce de Leche all over a lightly sprayed bundt or cake pan. This is going to be our caramel base substitute that traditional flans have.

In a mixing bowl add the softened cream cheese and mix until creamy. Then add the remainder of the Dulce de Leche, the sweetened condensed milk, and the sugar and mix once again until combined. In a separate bowl crack your eggs, then add them one by one into the cream cheese mixture, mixing well after each egg. The mixture should be thick and creamy but easy to pour.

Pour the mixture into the cake pan.

NOTE: All that all flans should be baked in a "Baño Maria" (Bain-marie -a water bath) to keep it baking evenly and so that the caramel or in this case Dulce de Leche doesn't harden or burn, and stays nice and soft and drips all over the flan when you flip it over, after it has cooled...That's the best part!

For the water Bath I like to add my flan pan into a larger pan and fill it up with boiling water halfway. Be careful and watch the video for reference.

Bake the flan at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes or so.

Once the Flan comes out of the oven, you want to let it cool completely for about an hour, or place it in the fridge for about 30 minutes. Once the flan is cooled, grab a large plate or platter and place it on top of the flan pan and flip it over, let the flan sit upside down like that for a few minutes until it pops out of the cake pan.

*If you're having trouble getting the flan to unstick, place the bottom of the flan pan under hot water for about a minute and that should help it unstick.

Once the flan unsticks from the pan, lift the pan off and watch all the gooey delicious Dulce de Leche drip onto the flan! Cut yourself a slice or two and ENJOY!
